“My Great-Grandmother’s Rocking Chair Is Not Mine!”

We are not Victims of our Genes!

“What our parents and grandparents have sown into their lives does not remain without consequences for us.” (Maria Prean)

That is true, however, the actual question is: How do I choose to deal with that inheritance?

The Bible repeatedly speaks about the principle of sowing and reaping:

“A man reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6:7)

This principle applies both in nature and in life.

If you sow wheat, you will not harvest corn.If you plant radishes, you will not harvest tomatoes.

The same is true of our thoughts, habits, decisions, and lifestyle choices.

What Do I Actually Want to Harvest?

This question challenges me again and again.

What do I want to harvest:

  • in my relationship with God?

  • in my relationships with other people?

  • in my health?

  • in my fitness?

  • in my calling?

  • in the way I manage my time and resources?

If I want to harvest health, joy, and strength, then I must sow the corresponding seeds today.

A Childhood Memory that has shaped my Life:

Some time ago, I came across my great-grandmother’s old rocking chair. Instantly, I was transported back to my childhood.

My great-grandparents had escaped from Russia to Paraguay through China. They endured difficult times and many hardships, yet they never lost their warmth and kindness.

My great-grandmother was a loving woman. I remember her joyful laughter, her hospitality, and her gentle spirit. Whenever we visited, she was usually sitting in her extra-large rocking chair.

Before we left, she would often call me over:

“Lynette, would you like to say your prayer?” I would recite my childhood prayer, receive a warm, loving kiss on my cheek, and then head home in our horse-drawn wagon.

The Sentence That Impacted My Life

As a young woman, I spent nearly a year in the United States and Canada to learn English.

When I returned home, I had gained about 20 kilograms (44 pounds).

One relative said to me:

“Lynette, you're going to end up just like your great-grandmother.”

That comment hit me hard.

Not because of my great-grandmother—I loved her dearly.

But because of what was implied about my weight. At first, I cried in my room, because it hurt. But that was the moment, I made a decision:

“I will take responsibility for my health and my weight.”

I refused to simply accept what others predicted about my future.

I wanted to become intentional.

Genetics Is Not Fate

Many people believe:

  • “It runs in our family.”

  • “I’m just predisposed to it.”

  • “That’s just the way I am.”

But God has given us more than genes.

He has given us the ability to make choices.

Not everything is in our control—but much more is than we often think.

Our daily habits shape our tomorrow.

They can trigger—or help calm—certain genetic tendencies.

Our daily decisions become our lifestyle.

And our lifestyle influences our future.

Every Change Begins With a Decision

Many people are waiting for change.

But change usually does not begin with a miracle.

It begins with a decision.

Jesus asked the man at the Pool of Bethesda:

“Do you want to get well?” (John 5:6)

What an astonishing question.

Of course he wanted to be healed.

Or did he?

Had his condition become part of his identity?

Ask yourself this question: "Do you want to get well?"

What Might Be Holding Me Back?

1️⃣ Inactivity – hoping for change without taking the necessary steps.

2️⃣ Fear – fearing the unknown more than the familiar.

3️⃣ Habit – even unhealthy patterns can feel comfortable and become part of my identity

4️⃣ Lack of discipline – good intentions alone never change a life.

Yes, God heals.

He opens the door and invites us.

But we must choose to walk through it.

Today, I am almost 60 years old.

And I can honestly say:

“I feel healthier, stronger, and freer than I did at 40.”

Of course, it has been a process.

Many small decisions.

Many new habits.

Many steps forward.

And above all, God’s grace.

My journey has not been perfect.

But it has taught me this:

“Beauty can arise even from the ashes of pain and brokenness.”

My Calling

Out of my own journey came this coaching concept: TEMPLE CARE

Your Invitation

Perhaps there is also a “rocking chair” in your life—something from your past that has shaped you.

The question is:

👉 What do you want to pass on to the next generation?

👉 What seeds are you sowing today?

👉 How do you want to live ten or twenty years from now?

“Your future does not begin tomorrow. It begins with the decisions you make today.”

If you would like to learn how to build a healthy lifestyle step by step, develop new habits, and strengthen your body, soul, and spirit, I would be honored to walk alongside you.
